There are few places in the world where gay culture blooms as it does in New York City. Gay theater, politics and entertainment are as popular and outgoing as any other activity in the city.
Geographically speaking, the West Village is the most established gay neighborhood, the East Village has a growing scene specially for younger gay men and lesbian and Chelsea is where gay socializing is most out and open.
There are plenty of gay & lesbian publications at newsstands in Chelsea and the West Village. Check out Creative Visions Bookstore, one of the largest bookstores that serves the community www.creativevisionsbooks.com.
The weekly magazine "Time Out New York" has also a section that lists events and activities.
